Voices of a Movement: LA RAZA and Community Journalism
What happens when communities take control of their own story and share their experiences in their own voices? In partnership with the Autry Museum, artworxLA students will explore the bilingual magazine LA Raza (1967-1977). They will learn how young photographers, artists, journalists, and activists played a central role in documenting culture and articulating the concerns of the Chicano movement in Los Angeles. Students will consider how groups today reclaim the tools of storytelling through independent, social, and mass media. Then, they will create their own projects that give voice to their lived experiences, express concerns for their community, and envision change.
