Level 2: AFTER-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES

LEVEL 2:

After-school Residencies and PATHWAYS Workshops

Students who are enrolled in artworxLA’s classroom workshops and want to be more involved can join our Advanced Programs by participating in after-school residencies and creative pathways workshops. Advanced Programs invites students out of the classroom to engage with professional artists in many artistic disciplines from institutions of higher education, and with cultural partners throughout Los Angeles. Students meet once a week for art instruction at the artworxLA HQ or a partnering institution.

Simultaneously, students participate in a weekly leadership program that teaches transferable creative and career skills. Pathways workshops help students succeed in the residencies, advance to summer arts scholarship opportunities, and practice applied critical thinking and creative problem solving. During workshops students practice resume writing, meet working artists and industry professionals, tour college campuses, and more.

after-school Residencies

Advanced Programs Residencies are after-school arts workshops. Students learn from working artists and instructors at art colleges in a specific medium. These change each year, but include a range of mediums like music production, visual arts, fashion design, poetry, graphic design, and others. Residencies take place both at artworxLA headquarters, or at a partnering institution like ArtCenter College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and other art colleges.

PAID HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP

The artworxLA high school internship program offers students a chance to work with professional artists, make new friends, and explore new places and opportunities throughout LA County. Joining Advanced Programs students will help prepare you for life after high school by providing chances to explore different education and career paths in the arts with working professionals in their chosen field. This program focuses on learning small business skills, mentorship, collaboration, and navigating the professional world confidently. Students are also connected to resources beyond the arts such as resume building, professional headshots, college/job preparation, and public speaking.

The 2022-23 High School Internship program is a hybrid of in-person and online sessions. Interns are expected to attend their chosen residency (Ceramics, Screenprinting, or Illustration) as well as Wednesday Pathways workshops on zoom. We will also have opportunities for in-person field trips throughout the year, including working at our annual Gala fundraiser.

I wanted the opportunity to take a lot of art courses, and to be a part of that community and participate in a team — where we all have the same intentions and grow together through creative practices.

Through Our Lens

In the Spring of 2020, Advanced Programs students and alum filmed a video project documenting their lives and how they were coping with “Stay-at-Home” orders due to the pandemic. The video music was also created and produced by artworxLA students.
