Communications Intern
2026 Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Arts Internship Program
Reports to Executive Director
Reporting to artworxLA’s Executive Director, the Communications Intern will gain hands-on experience in developing a campaign from strategy to production with a focus on artworxLA's legacy of positive youth development in Los Angeles County. The intern will expand their visual and verbal communication skills by helping to create key marketing assets in preparation for artworxLA's 35th Anniversary campaign. The intern will conduct archival research into the organization's history and connect with artworxLA's various stakeholders: students and alumni, artists and partnering cultural institutions; corporate, foundation, and government partners; individual donors; educators; and other supporters.
Responsibilities include:
Conduct research into artworxLA's history of partnerships with artists, schools, and cultural institutions.
Work closely with the Executive Director and Development and Communications Coordinator on copywriting for artworxLA’s 35th Anniversary campaign, including posts featuring key stakeholders.
Work with artworxLA’s Lead Designer to develop a creative direction for the campaign across platforms (print, e-blast, website, social media).
Assist with the development and packaging of press materials.
Utilize photography, video, and graphic design to document programs from ongoing workshops and special events during the course of the internship.
Maintain data on event and campaign outreach and participation.
Learn how to develop a body of design work based on established graphic standards and guidelines based on the organization’s partnerships and programs.
The development and execution of the campaign will be a yearlong process leading up to the 35th anniversary, with the internship period starting in the beginning planning phases of ideation. Previous iterations have been legacy projects that impact the organization not only in Development and Communications, but across Programming, partnerships and more. The project will be the intern's own indelible mark on artworxLA's history.
Additional Duties and Activities:
The Communications Intern will also attend weekly all-staff meetings and biweekly meetings with Development and Communications staff in order to provide feedback and share fundraising updates for upcoming social media and newsletter posts, to receive feedback on their creative briefs, and learn about social media content production. The intern will be given the opportunity to learn basic web design skills through building out the campaign portion of artworxLA's website in Squarespace.
The intern will be included in the processes of marketing and producing artworxLA’s special events and signature Public Presentations. The Communications Intern will work alongside Programming team staff to create social media, email newsletters, and website marketing materials.
Successful candidates will have completed coursework in the arts, art history, graphic design, communication arts, or related fields; a passion for working for the benefit of youth/community; an interest in museum education, arts education, design, and/or illustration.
Terms of the Internship
400 hours with 20–40 hours per week based on the selected candidate’s schedule. Applicants must be available to report to work in person and virtually for a hybrid format.
